There are two acts of farming that bring pure joy: the planting of crops in the spring and the harvesting of them in the summer or fall.
Spring brings a fresh start and optimism for a new season. Whether planting annual crops such as tomatoes and pumpkins, or putting fruit trees in the ground that will produce for decades, planting signifies a new beginning and the promise of good things to come.
Harvest is the celebration of all the hard work that took place to bring the fruit or vegetables to maturity. It’s this in-between time when the vast majority of the work is done. These daily disciplines, also known as the nurturing of the crops, are the watering, thinning, feeding of nutrients, control of weeds, and protection from diseases.
This is the stage we are in right now. With the low temperatures and all the extra moisture we have had in June comes extra weeds! It is absolutely crucial to keep them under control as they will choke out the plants and steal moisture and nutrients from the crops we are trying to grow. This could result in poor quality fruit or vegetables along with low yields. Weeding is a never ending taskthat calls for sheer discipline and perseverance, with no instant or obvious reward.
I think that is what sometimes makes it feel like the hardest part. Our lives can feel very much the same, can’t they? Oftentimes it is in the mundane tasks or the hard work to get to our goal where we build our strength and character, and where we learn some of life’s toughest lessons. It is not easy or fun, but it does make the reward or the fruit that much sweeter!
Farming and life have remarkable similarities; stay the course, the reward will come!
