JUNE is upon us and the excitement of spring planting has come and gone. However, with harvest still being many weeks away (other than strawberries!), I think that this is the time of year when hard work, perseverance and patience really come into play.
The upcoming weeks and months will be spent battling the weeds, thinning the tree fruits, keeping on top of watering and fertilizing, trying not to worry too much about the weather, which we cannot control, and waiting!
The romantic way of putting it, is that June is a time for nurturing the crops, but the reality of what that means is not always so glamorous. It is really about a combination of hard work, perseverance and patience. Oh my goodness, does that ever sound a lot like parenting!
With Father’s Day approaching, my thoughts drift to my own Dad, Tom, who I’m so thankful for. As I reflect on these three words - hard work, perseverance and patience - my Dad has really embodied each one. Firstly, he is so hardworking: the most obvious example is seen in his tireless striving for excellence on the farm, but I also see his work ethic applied in his love for the family and community.
Second, he has set an example of consistently persevering at whatever he puts his hand to, not just day after day, but year after year, decade after decade.
Lastly, he is patient. To be sure, none of us Davison’s are especially known for our patient nature; I believe that some of us have even been aptly nicknamed “Hurry Up Davison!'' But I can think of no one more consistently patient than Dad, who has been incredibly gracious with us kids over the changing seasons of life, personal growth and challenges.
As I contemplate these things and all they entail, I am challenged not to overlook the importance of the season of nurturing. It may not be the most glamorous of seasons but it is where character is strengthened, and its impact on the end result is perhaps the most important of all.
