Our original market in 1989, now renovated into our current Farmhouse bakery.
Lately all I seem to be hearing is “Covid-19 this and Covid-19 that.” When I watch the news or read the reports it leaves me wondering, “Is this for real? How can the world change so much, so quickly?” But the reality is, it has, and there are, no doubt, more changes to come. I am determined to focus on the positive in this pandemic, even though some days I have to look hard to find it.

Most of us have been forced to simplify our lives and spend more time at home. I‘m not sure about you, but I have gotten myself into a ‘clean up’ and ‘purge’ mode, both at home and at the office. Now that the gift shop is set up and we are open for business, I have taken some time to clean out filing cabinets in my office. Oh my, what a job! Decades of marketing material, brochures, newspaper articles, notes from festivals and contests, past newsletters, old photos; you name it, I’ve found it! I am from the generation that instinctively prints out a hard copy of every plan, every meeting and every report. Now the challenge is, what should I keep and what should I purge?
It’s all part of the farm’s history and my history as Marketing Director, and it is a testimony to the growth and changes we have experienced over the past 35 years. Normally I have no trouble purging, but for some reason I am struggling with this. Going through the mountains of documents has reminded me of where we came from: an operating partnership formed with Bob and Dora Davison back in 1985.

We have adapted to many changes as our business has grown, but nothing compared to what Bob and Dora have adapted to! They have been so gracious with Tom and I by allowing us to try new things, make mistakes and, over the years, take the management reins. The funny thing is, Tom and I are in a transition stage right now. We are handing over more and more responsibility to our next generation, Laura & Kevin and Lance and Rachel, two of our children and their spouses working with us here at the farm. It is a joy and delight to work with them and I trust we will be as gracious as the generation before us.

Now let’s go back to finding the positives in these strange times. I have had time to reflect on the blessings I have seen over the years - the hard times, the stretching times, the abundant years and the lean years. I have learned and grown in some way through it all and trust 2020 will be no different. In the meantime, I will try and continue to use my time wisely by purging, cleaning, reflecting, appreciating and planning for better days ahead. The crops are planted, the sun is shinning and before you know it, we will be eating ripe, juicy strawberries fresh from our fields.  God is good!
