Lately, there is a question that I keep getting asked. This question seems to come around every couple of days now: “Mom, when is the first day of summer?”

Like every other young child in the country, my boys are tiring of their school, sports, and music routines. They want to be outside playing, riding bikes, building forts . . . and I have to agree with them; it is hard to be inside when it’s so nice outside. For my boys, when they think of summer, I’m pretty sure what is on the fore-front of their minds is “school’s out!”. (I don’t imagine our teachers are thinking of anything else either. 😉)

For me, however, when I think of summer I think of juicy, fresh, fruit and full-flavored vegetables. We are so lucky to have an abundance of locally grown produce here in the Okanagan and I think all of us can agree - you just can’t beat the flavor of produce grown close to home.

This spring weather has truly been amazing! As I reflect over the changes in the fields and orchards since the last newsletter, the difference is actually remarkable. On the farm, in just a few short weeks, we have gone from blossoms to fresh fruit! With a little bit of heat, things around here change so fast. The first Davison fruit of the season has arrived, and as my 11 year old nephew Spencer said, “Nothing tastes better than the first fresh strawberry of the season!” I whole heartedly agree with him - there is nothing sweeter!

This year you won't want to wait long if you are planning on freezing strawberries or making your own strawberry jam, this spring heat has brought the crop earlier, but it will also make the strawberry season shorter. Now is the time to come up to the farm and get your fix.
