The other night my two-year-old didn’t want to go to sleep. He put up a bit of a fuss and then stopped, looked at me with his big brown eyes and said, “If I cry will it make the day turn on?”
Trying hard to keep a straight face I explained that the day would come quicker if he quietly lay down and went to sleep. Miraculously, he did just that. When I went to him in the morning he jumped out of his bed, sprinted to the window and exclaimed, “Look! I went to sleep fast and I made the day turn on!”
We are all a little like a two-year-old at bedtime, aren’t we? It is human nature to always want the next thing to come quickly. It takes self-control and intentionality to savour each moment for what it is. June can have a bit of a “nighttime” feel on the farm. The crops are all in the ground and we are waiting for them to grow and mature before we can enjoy the fruits of our labours. Instead of being impatient I am going to try to be intentional about enjoying the growing season this year. One of my favourite ways to do this with my kids is to go on rides around the farm in a golf cart to look at the progress and growth in the fields.
It seems that the apples, pumpkin vines and corn grow in size every day! Other crops, like tomatoes, are a little slower growing, but it is easy to see the progress from week to week. My kids especially enjoy checking on their cherry tomato plants because they are planning on picking and selling them for you to enjoy again this summer. If you want to go on a crop tour similar to the ones we enjoy, make sure you take advantage of our Johnny Popper Tractor Tours. They run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10-4, and starting on June 30th they will be running every day!
Even though June is mostly a waiting game, there are a few early crops that we can enjoy right now. Strawberries are wrapping up for the year, but I am happy to let you know that cherry season has begun! Apricots, zucchini, cucumbers and sugar snap peas are just around the corner as well.
