It has been a cold week in the Okanagan; winter is very much still here. While I understand that many people don’t like winter, I actually love it! For me, each season brings different routines and habits. The blanket of snow on the ground is covering up all my undone yard work, and while I miss summer picnics and the feel of grass under my toes, I enjoy the shorter to-do list of winter that comes with the privilege of enjoying some of the hard work of months past.
All summer and fall I work hard preserving and freezing produce. Now, in these winter months, I just need to remember to use it! February is “Project: Clean out the Freezer” month. It is when I get to use all the field ripened fruits and vegetables I stored away in their peak season. Last week I made a strawberry rhubarb pie; it was a great opportunity to remind my boys of the benefits of working hard and putting away for the winter.
“You know boys,” I said as we dove into our warm pie, “the only reason we get to eat strawberry rhubarb pie in the middle of winter is because we worked hard in the summer. Try and remember this the next time I ask you for help picking rhubarb!”
A good lesson in hard work, in saving for the future, and in delayed gratification, is probably something we could all use a little more of in our lives!

“Project: Clean out the Freezer” is happening not only in my home, but also at the farm’s Cannery. Our team is doing the same thing that I am, but on a much larger scale. Last summer, in between producing soups and sandwiches, the foodservice team pushed themselves hard to put away fresh peaches, peppers, strawberries and the like. Now this produce is being transformed into jalapeño jellies, lady rose relish, peach jam, strawberry syrup and many more mouth-watering products. Each and every day they are churning out hundreds of jars of Nana’s preserves! We are excited to have the shelves full again and ready for opening day in a few short months. Using our own produce that we know we worked hard for is rewarding work, and it’s also satisfying to know that it will be enjoyed by many of you in the days to come.

Thank you for taking the time to read our Facebook updates and Davison Family newsletters, and for keeping in touch over the winter. This hasn’t been an easy winter for any of us, but I know spring is coming, and we’ll take it one day at a time until then.
Hello from the family, hang in there, and we look forward to seeing each other soon.
Laura,
