Give Thanks in all Circumstances

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, my mind turns to contemplating the many blessings in my life. I truly have much to be thankful for: a beautiful family and great friends, plenty of nourishing food to eat, a cozy and safe place to lay my head at night. But lately I have been challenged to think deeper than that. What would my life look like if I were to give thanks in all circumstances? This thought stems from a favourite Bible verse of mine: “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). We all know that life is full of ups and downs. There are times when giving thanks should come naturally, times when life’s circumstances are really very good. Then there are times when it is very challenging to come up with anything to be thankful for. So how does one live a life of thankfulness despite circumstances?

I think the main key to this is recognizing that thankfulness is an action, not just a feeling. Yes, we can certainly feel thankful, but in order to do so we must first choose to be thankful. It is entirely possible to be experiencing something wonderful without being thankful at all. In the same way, it is feasible that one could go through a difficult time with a heart overflowing with thankfulness. Even as I write this newsletter, I am having a tough day. I started off on the wrong foot and I can feel in my heart that self-pity is battling to overtake contentment and thankfulness. So I go to war, fighting against lies and replacing them with truth. Have I mastered this? Certainly not! But I am looking forward to a lifetime of learning and growing.

At the farm right now, there is much to inspire gratitude. The leaves are starting to change into gorgeous hues of red, yellow and orange. There are pumpkins absolutely everywhere and a myriad of crisp apples to taste. The sound of children playing and laughing is ringing in the air. There are just three weekends of Pumpkin Fest left before we are closed for the season, so don’t wait to come on down and take it all in. And as we soak in these last weeks of autumn, let’s remember to choose thankfulness in every circumstance. As Will Arnett says, “I am happy because I’m grateful. I choose to be grateful. That gratitude allows me to be happy.”
