Open Day is Tomorrow!

After months of planning and preparation, tomorrow we get the privilege of opening up our doors for our 2022 season. As I have run into some of you around town I’ve been so encouraged by the stories you’ve shared with me; stories of your sons and daughters laying out their John Deere clothes in preparation, and of calendar countdowns as your family eagerly awaits opening day. Thank you for sharing these moments with us. They have brought a smile to my face! It is both humbling and deeply satisfying to hear these accounts and we feel privileged to be part of your happy memories and springtime traditions.

One of my winter projects was creating a new trayliner (the paper that lines the food trays) for the Farmhouse Cafe. It depicts, in both old and new photos, the history of food at the farm. This was a very interesting project as I spent time digging around in old photo albums to figure out when products were born. I learned things I didn’t previously know. For example, did you know that my mom, Tamra, worked on developing our caramel apple recipe for 3 years? Raelene, our Director of Foodservice, sold hotdogs and popcorn at our first pumpkin festival in 1995. Our first Apple Juice Press arrived in 1991 and my dad, Tom, worked on blending the different unique varieties we grow to get that recipe just right. Our first Real Fruit Ice Cream machine came to us all the way from Australia! This project reminded me that many different people’s hard work and ingenuity have contributed to our farm over the years. Making all these products  from scratch takes hard work and care, and I’m so grateful for the team who started these traditions, as well as for the team who carries these traditions forward today. Thank you Raelene, Elyse, Megan and Betti and for leading our Foodservice teams so well and for all the delicious treats you share with us all!

This spring we will be open 5 days a week: Tuesday to Saturday from 9-5pm (please note we will be closed Sundays and Mondays). Our Real Fruit Ice cream and specialty coffees will be available from 11-5pm in the Old Brick Press, and the Farmhouse Café will be serving delicious food, treats and coffee from 9-4pm. We hope to see you in the coming days and are so grateful we get to share another season together.

Laura Shaw,
For the Family

PS: We have some new additions to the barn family. Don’t forget to head up there and meet the baby goats, Dot, Blackie and Blossom. Their long legs and playful personalities will cause you to smile no matter how old you are!
