June has come to a close, and hopes are rising that the end of tight restrictions, prohibiting us from gathering together, are nearing an end. What an experience this has been; hopefully not one we will repeat in the years to come. Summer is a time to gather and celebrate with friends and family. It’s a time to enjoy the outdoors and the long warm evenings, splashing in the water in one of our many beautiful lakes or sitting under the setting sun. Celebrating and enjoying good food together go hand in hand, and summertime makes this easy with the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables available from our gardens, orchards, and local farmer’s markets. We are very excited about the crops this year at our farm. We harvested a great crop of strawberries, which are now coming to an end due to the intense heat. Hopefully you were able to enjoy them as they really were amazing! Soon we will be harvesting the heat loving veggies like tomatoes, sweet corn and peppers.

Zucchini and sugar-snap peas are available now, and the field cucumbers are close behind. Our farmers are all optimistic about the upcoming crops of peaches, pears and apples, which look very promising. This year we will have a brand-new space to sell our produce in: the Packing Shed! The former fruit-packing area (the building beside the brick cannery) has been transformed into a spacious and cool retail space, and will hopefully be more efficient for our staff and a much better experience for our customers. We anticipate opening the doors the second week of July, so follow us on Facebook for day-to-day updates.

Dora Davison's mother Gladys in her garden in the summer of 1949;
Now the new location of the Red Tail Ranch.
Red Tail Ranch is named after the Red-tailed Hawk seen daily at the farm.

This past winter we expanded our farming operation by building a new packing and storage facility at Red Tail Ranch, which is just up the road from Davison Orchards. Red Tail Ranch is a piece of land that our fourth generation farmers, Lance and Rachel, purchased two years ago, giving them a home-site for their family, and allowing for the future growth of Davison Orchards. The really neat thing about this property is that Dora Davison, Lance’s Nana, lived there as teenager when her parents Ralph & Gladys McKenzie owned it! This is actually the way Bob and Dora met back in the late 1940's. We are so happy to have it back in the family! This new farm will not be open to the public, but it does free up more space for our produce sales at the main farm. Lance and Rachel built a new home at Red Tail Ranch this winter, giving them more room for their family of 5 children.

This spring we planted 5000 apple trees on the new property, and we look forward to expanding our acreage in the decades ahead. It’s been a busy winter with our building and renovation projects. Now we look forward to focusing on our orchards and field crops, harvesting farm goodness to share with you and yours. Summer is here with all the abundance that comes with it. We are now open every day of the week and farm tours will begin daily starting on July 1st. Come relax, see all the changes, and enjoy more room to roam!
See you at the farm,
Tamra, for the Davison family
