Water is Life

While the Okanagan is an amazing place to grow fruits and veggies, one of the thing we lack is enough annual rainfall to sustain agriculture; if we did not irrigate it would be impossible to grow much of anything! This is most likely not surprising to you – if you do any gardening or have a lawn you know this very well. To me what is more surprising is that there are places that exist in this country that you don’t need to have irrigation systems! Rachel, my sister in law, grew up in Manitoba where there is so much moisture and the water table is so high they don’t even have to irrigate their gardens or farms. Amazing! What a diverse country we live in.
At our farm in Vernon our irrigation water is from a source that is over 100 years old. This winter I had the privilege of working on a project with my Grandpa Bob researching the Grey Canal. We dug up some old pictures and put together some posters explaining it’s significance to the Vernon valley and to our farm. My favorite, is a picture we found of Nana’s mom giving her young sons a bath in the canal. That really brought the history to life for me.  We hope to someday get the posters up on the popular walking trail above our farm, but in the meantime, come and check them out in the Silo above the market.
At our Grandview farm, however, we don’t get our irrigation water from a municipal system, but from an underground well. An underground well is another everyday miracle I have come to appreciate. The fact that we have the equipment to access water that is more than 300 feet below the ground is astounding! Talk about life-giving!  As the saying goes, “Water is Life” and we would not experience such abundant crops without it.
Speaking of abundance, we are in the height of strawberry harvest, and we look forward to the bountiful harvest of more fruits and veggies ahead. Cherries are right around the corner – fingers crossed we’ll have some this weekend!  We love farming and the joy of growing food!
