Barnyard Dynamics

Do you ever wonder what goes on in the animal barn after hours? To fire up your imagination, I am going to attempt to bring to life for you, some of our animals personality traits and quirks.

The Potbelly Pigs (Polly and Esther): Lazing in the sun, eating and tidying up are the favorite pastimes of these sisters. Despite their reputation for being slobs, pigs are actually one of the most particular animals, and Polly and Esther are no exception.  They have made themselves a thick mattress of straw to sleep on, they always go to the bathroom in the same spot, and every day without fail, they upset their food dish and eat off the ground. Pigs will be pigs.
Jewel the Pony: A bit of a diva, Jewel knows how to get her own way. Despite being well along in years, she is no plod-along-pony! She loves to kick up her heels, especially in the wind. Jewel prefers winter to summer, chooses grass over hay, and enjoys the company of Sergeant the Goat over Tilly the Donkey. Being brushed down and taking the farm children for rides are two of her favorite pastimes.

Oreo the Goat: Named for her two black stripes with white sandwiched in between, Oreo the Goat loves to get into mischief. She has been known to break out of her pen using her mouth, by flicking up the latch with her tongue, then pushing the slide bar with her nose! However, once she is out, she doesn’t want to go anywhere but back in. Oreo shares her home with her Mom, her sister, and her niece. I’ll let you imagine the family dynamics that creates.
Tilly the Donkey: Don’t tell any of the other animals, but I have a real soft spot for Tilly. A pessimist by nature, a little extra loving goes a long way with her. My four year old spends a lot of time brushing and leading her around, and even goes for short rides on her back. When feeling happy, Tilly lets you know by rubbing her nose against you like a cat, which sometimes topples the kids over! She can’t stand cold weather, and her favorite treat is banana peels.

Rocky the Cat: No barnyard is complete without a cat to run the place, and Rocky fills the role purrfectly! A hunting fanatic, she is constantly on the lookout for birds, mice, or even bits of wiggling string to pounce on. If you can’t find her at the barn she is probably at my house where she loves to curl up and nap on the sunny deck.
Having the job of caring for the creatures is a privilege for my children and I. By default, we learn many life lessons such as daily responsibility, how to be gentle and kind, and how the circle of life goes ‘round. As you visit throughout the summer we hope you will be able to enjoy the antics of the animals as much as we do!
