If you are a parent with school-aged children, it means “back to school”, new inside shoes and clothes, school supplies, a lunch kit, and good stuff (like apples) to pack in it! I started a family tradition of taking a picture of all the children on their first day of school. I am a sucker for punishment because you certainly don’t need any more distractions on day oneof school, but it sure is fun to look back at them now! I came across the above photo the other day and it warmed my heart. I can hardly believe the years have gone by so quickly- the little boy in the photo is my son Lance. He now manages the production crew here at the farm and facilitates the harvest of dozens of different crops and literally tons and tons of fresh produce. Each of the children are a blessing, and what a joy to see the fourth generation take a leadership role in our business and their own lives.
If you are retired, it might mean more time to travel and camp when the highways and campgrounds are less busy. September weather can be glorious along with the ever-changing colours of fall. You are blessed if you can get out and enjoy them!

If you are a “Food Lover”– you absolutely love September. No other month has more choices in fresh produce. There are tasty foods like tomatoes, peppers & Italian prunes to mention a few. There is also produce that will keep for months - great tasting apples, pears and squash, beets, carrots, and more! The Okanagan is an amazing place to live if you love the abundance of fresh flavours that grow here!
If you are a farmer – September means the anticipated harvest has arrived! You work all year for the few weeks ahead and we are ever so grateful if the weather cooperates and you can harvest the abundance while enjoying the outdoors doing it. We are harvesting apples in a big way and the much anticipated Honeycrisp apples are now here, ripe and ready!
Fall is my favourite season – the harvest, the autumn colours, cooler nights and crisp refreshing mornings. I am a “Food Lover” so the abundance of food to enjoy now and preserve for later is just plain amazing. I am a decorator to, so the colours of fall, the gourds, the pumpkins, and the squash inspire me to decorate my house, the farm, the market, and gift shop. There are so many beautiful things to work with, it really is a joy!
Take in all the colours of fall with fall displays, produce, and products!
And the weather…. who knows what the days ahead will bring, but for now – it’s spectacular. I’m going to get in my kayak and enjoy it from the water, put on my boots and enjoy the orchard, the pumpkin patch, and the fall colours from the ground, and as I walk about decorating the farm, I am going to enjoy a Pumpkin Steamer on the patio. I LOVE FALL!!
Welcome September, Welcome Fall, Welcome to the Harvest.
Whatever September means to you - ENJOY!
