Summer Is Here

Over the past few months we have enjoyed sharing with you about some of the behind-the-scenes background and history of Davison Orchards. We will jump back into that series next time, but today, as we head into summertime, I thought I’d give you an update on what is happening around the farm and Country Village presently.
Out in the fields and orchards the crops are growing, albeit slowly. The cool and wet spring has been refreshing in a sense. After last year’s heat dome and wildfires, I believe this weather has brought a much needed sense of calm that we won’t have a repeat of last year’s summer; we can all be grateful for that! But as Grandpa Bob would say: “There’s always a trade-off.” The cool, wet weather has created a different set of challenges for farmers. We are thankful that we grow such a wide variety of produce, because when one crop struggles there is usually another one that is thriving. However, even though some crops are growing nicely, it is going to be a late year for all local produce.
Check out the height difference from the corn this time last year vs this year!
On an average year our strawberry season would almost be over and cherries would be starting to roll in. This year we are anticipating the arrival of limited quantities of sweet cherries on July 1, but the good news is that strawberries are now at the peak of their season, just in time for the July long weekend!

The farm is a happening place during the summertime. Along with the increase in traffic, fun plans, and produce to process, more jobs come available. We are looking for a few more members to join our team. There are a wide variety of positions to choose from including customer service, administration, food preparation and baking. We are even looking for a salsa-making team for August! If you are interested in becoming part of our team and experiencing first-hand what it takes to make this place happen, apply online or come up and talk to a manager.
Canada Day is in two sleeps and we are excited to bring back one of Davison Orchard’s longtime traditions to celebrate: free cake! This is something we have been doing since I was a child, and after a two year break I am especially excited to be passing out cake once again. Come join us on Friday at 10am to celebrate. There will be a special guest pianist, and Rachel and I will be leading the singing of our national anthem before we cut and pass the cake (limited supply). I can’t think of a better way to kick start Canada Day.
Keeping in theme with the Canadian festivities, make sure you come and try a Maple Latte or a London Ontario Fog (Earl Grey Tea with a shot of maple in steamed milk – it’s to die for!) in the Farmhouse Café or Old Brick Press. Then hop on the Johnny Popper and test your Canadian knowledge with some trivia. Yes, there will be prizes! I would be remiss if I didn’t let you know about the newest lunch item on the Farmhouse Café menu; the Summer Fresh Fiesta Wrap. The wrap comes with a side of our Black Bean Salsa and Fresh-is-Best Chips; it is an incredibly satisfying meal on a hot summer day.
I’m excited for summer and am thankful that we can start it off by celebrating our country together. See you on Friday at the cake table,
