The Harvest is Complete
As I look out my window this morning I see the trees turning an array of beautiful fall colours and, in the distance, a fresh dusting of snow on Terrace Mountain. The peach trees have started to shed their bright yellow leaves, the pear trees are turning an amber red and soon the apple trees will change colour too. They are slowly going to sleep for the winter as they have done their job; the harvest is complete. We finished picking our apples on October 19th, a new record for the latest season ever! You would think with the hot summer we had the harvest would have been early, but with the cool wet May and June coupled with the unusually warm fall, harvest was delayed this year by a good two weeks. It took patience and crop management, picking over the same apple trees several times to look for ripe fruit, but we managed to harvest a good apple crop in the end.
The incredible fall weather was a blessing for working in as well as for our customers. It meant that the flowers kept growing and blooming and Joyce, Tom’s sister kept on watering! This week we will finally begin the clean up of hundreds of flowers dispersed around the buildings and grounds. I hope you enjoyed them as much as I did. I sure appreciate Joyce and her dedication to the beauty of our farm.
Only a few more days and we will be closed for the season- Monday, October 31 at 5pm. There is still a great selection of apples to choose from including Davison Honeycrisp. We also have squash, pears and even prune plums available. NOW is the time to stock up on your favourite Davison treats, whether it’s produce or the many preserves we make right here on the farm. Beginning Friday, October 28th, we will be offering a 10% discount on all specialty foods and gifts in the country village.
We will be taking a social media break during the months of November and December and will connect again in the new year. Thank you for all your encouraging comments. We sincerely appreciate all feedback so drop us an email (davisonfamily@davisonorchards.ca) with any suggestion to help us improve your experience here at our farm. Next year we will celebrate 90 years of farming in Vernon, so stay tuned so you can help us celebrate this milestone.
Have a great winter and see you in the spring!
Forever grateful,
Tamra, for the whole Davison Family
