There are some common labels given to describe the different generations or groups of people in our society: baby boomers, gen-x, millennials, dinks (double income, no kids). Apart from age brackets, each generation has its unique attributes that generally make up the group. Understanding each generation is important when communicating, meeting their needs and relating on a level that makes sense to them. I’m a baby boomer, also referred to as the “sandwich generation.” I have elderly parents and young grandchildren to help care for. While it is challenging, it also comes with blessings such as stronger family bonds, keeping my caregiving skills sharp and inter-generational unity. As I spend my energies introducing the 5th generation in our family to farming life I am reminded how fortunate I am to have a brother and his wife who are my mom’s main caregivers.
