It’s Honeycrisp Season!

View in browser Today I brought my autumn decorations out of storage. I don’t have much, but there are a few things that I set out each September to celebrate the season. As I moved around the house placing a pumpkin here and a table runner there, I was happy with how it looked; it propelled me into the autumn mood! Earlier in the day I had placed a beautiful bouquet of sunflowers and pink cosmos from my garden on the kitchen table. However, as the afternoon wore on I felt off every time I walked from the kitchen to the living room. It didn’t match. The cheerful, summery flowers looked so good, but it was messing with my head as I bounced back and forth between the summer bouquet and the autumnal orange pumpkins and wheat sheaves on my mantel. Then it dawned on me: this is September! September is the juxtaposition of summer meeting autumn. One day the clouds roll in, the temperature drops and you snuggle up in that favourite sweater of yours. Without any guilt of heating up the house, you reach for the apples and cinnamon and thumb through your favourite recipe books, looking to satiate that craving for some sweet comfort food. But then the next day it seems like summer again. The temperature outdoors is a perfect 25 degrees, you pick yet another fresh bouquet of flowers from the garden and enjoy one more slice of that sweet, juicy watermelon. What a beautiful month it is! We’ve got one foot firmly planted in autumn while the other is still barefoot and fancy-free in summer. As the landscape slowly turns from summer to autumn, so do the farmhouse kitchens and bakery. In fact, this very week the team made the year’s supply of Okanagan Summer and Apple Harvest Salsa – while at the same time churning out Chicken Pot Pies, Caramel Apples, Pumpkin Pies, Nana’s Apple Slices, Spiced Chai Pear Loaves, Maple Pumpkin Steamers... oh how I could go on. Once again, summer meets fall, and what a delicious time of year it is. The biggest problem is making the choice of what to eat – there’s too many things to all enjoy at once! This month, the Johnny Popper is transporting happy apple pickers to the orchard all month long. You can jump on the train Wednesday through Sunday, 10am - 4pm and experience the fall harvest for yourself.  If you are coming on the weekend, you can expect to be met with the distinct smell of fresh Apple Cider Donuts wafting through the crisp air. Stop by the Old Brick Press and grab a Spiced Apple Cider and a Snickerdoodle for the ride, allowing yourself the treat of enjoying all the season has to offer.
