It dawned on me the other night, as we enjoyed applesauce as a side with our supper and pumpkin cake for dessert, that summer is fading to autumn. The long hot days are coming to an end and are being replaced by a chill in the evening air. Suddenly I have cravings for bowls of soup and foamy lattes. Only one more week before the big orange school buses will be back on their routes, toting kids with bulging backpacks to and from their places of learning. Programs and lessons will pick up where they left off - rusty fingers pressing piano keys under the watchful eye of their teachers, church youth groups banding together to create a place of belonging, sweaty volleyball practices ending in a feeling of victory.
