Summer-long Harvest! 🍅

Last night I sat down with my phone for a few minutes and swiped through my summer pictures. As I looked back on all that has happened in a few short weeks I felt so overwhelmed and thankful. I’ve been known to bad-mouth cell phones on occasion, but I must admit they are a digital journal of our lives, especially if you take a lot of photos. It really is amazing to walk through your pictures and remember all the activities you’ve experienced over a given set of time.

This summer I did something I have never done in my nearly 40 years of farming; I took a week off in August! I still can hardly believe I did as it is so busy at the farm. Through the generosity of family friends I was able to take my grandkids camping to a property close to Vernon. My adult children and my grandkids came and went while I filled the roles of camp director and camp cook. What fun it was making memories with my 10 grandkids as we biked, swam, kayaked and made crafts. It was a privilege I don’t take for granted as many others worked extra hard at the farm to make it happen.

It is now the middle of August, and what a warm summer we have had! On the farm front we have enjoyed an early harvest of sweet and delicious produce: watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes, sweet corn and summer apples just to name a few. Soon we will be harvesting Italian prune plums, Bartlett pears and many varieties of apples including our popular HONEYCRISP.

In about one week I will begin the transition to “All things Autumn”, our theme for the fall. The gift shop will transform and outdoor displays of “Autumn Abundance” will be popping up around every corner at the farm. Autumn is my favourite time of the year but I’m not going to wish these last few weeks of summer away just yet.

Hopefully you too will make the most of summer in the next few weeks. Enjoy the warm days, abundant produce and maybe another outdoor barbeque or patio dinner on these delightful summer evenings. Make some memories, take some pictures and savour the moment.
