Measuring Sticks

The other day, someone asked me when Tom and I started working full time at the farm. I replied, “When Leah, my eldest daughter, was 6 months old , so January, 1985.” Have you ever found yourself thinking in a similar way, such as: “That happened when this child was born or the year we moved, or the spring I graduated.” We often measure time around significant events in our lives. This helps us to remember the year because, as we all know, time slips by so quickly; what seems like just a few years ago could in fact be a decade ago! This summer, Laura measured the growth of our corn by using her boys as a measuring stick. The boys likely grew some, but not nearly as fast as the corn!
Here we are in the middle of August, harvesting corn, peaches, melons and tomatoes as fast as we can pick them. Because of the intense heat we experienced at the end of June and throughout July, these crops are hitting their peak early. This means that their season will likely end early as well, so you should plan ahead and stock up sooner rather than later so that you don’t miss out. Now is the time to preserve peaches and tomatoes to enjoy this winter. The U-pick tomato fields are laden with ripe fruit, and the Red-Haven Peaches that are in season right now are my personal favourite for canning. In fact, I canned my peaches this week! If you have never tried this before, the attached video will be helpful; why not give it a try? Our peaches have a new look this week - an ash stripe, caused by falling ash from the wildfire mixed with rain. They are not so beautiful on the outside but still perfectly delicious on the inside. We are so grateful for the rain, despite the mess they made on the peaches.

2020 and 2021 will be dates we remember, not because of events we were celebrating, but rather for events we wish we could forget: Covid, lockdowns, masks, wild fires, extreme heat and smoke, uncertainty in our lives. I imagine many of us will use these years as measuring sticks in time. We all have had many negatives in our lives, but how we deal with them will define us more than the circumstances themselves. Let’s learn from these events, think positively and be thankful for the good things in our lives. I am determined to work hard at being grateful this season, thanking God every day for His blessings and not dwelling on the dark days. There really is something good in every day.

Come visit us at the farm, taste the abundance of food we grow here in Vernon, relax with a coffee or treat, ponder the blessings in your life, and take some time to enjoy the last few weeks of summer!
