From Seeds to Harvest

“We plant the seed, but God gives the harvest.” This phrase is one I have been familiar with all of my life. As a farmer’s daughter, I am accustomed to hearing that there is much that is out of our control. Yet, while I have always been familiar with this idea, I’ll admit that this summer has brought it up more than usual. We plan, we work, we organize, and we forecast, all in an effort to strive for excellence as farmers, business owners, or people just trying to live life. But these last few weeks and months have taken so many twists and turns, with factors that are completely out of our control. This is hard! This is humbling! This is frustrating! I am learning to become more flexible and to appreciate the gifts I have, but this lesson has come with some serious growing pains. Maybe you can relate? I am learning to a deeper level that I do not have control; I am holding on to my faith that God does. Therefore, this saying has taken on new meaning and perspective for me this summer, that “while we plant the seed, it is God who gives us the harvest.”
Preparing for the Harvest
Despite the fact that many things are different this September, I am grateful that some things remain the same. One of those things in my life is that September brings the apple harvest. We are ready! The bins are laid out down each orchard row just waiting to be filled. Some early apples have been picked, while others are hanging on the tree for just a few more days to sweeten and ripen. Did you know that we need cool temperatures to achieve brightly coloured, sweet apples? It is these cool nights that transform a rosy pink apple into a rich red, almost like magic. This can literally happen overnight! We got to witness this phenomena last week, which means that this week apple harvest starts in earnest. From now through to mid-October we will be picking hard every day.

Steady on dear friends. Let’s keep learning through these hard times, let us keep being thankful, and of course, let’s keep eating apples.
